Bryan Robson has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tactical switch over the weekend.
Manchester United kept just their second clean sheet in their last 22 games against Tottenham, as the hosts failed to register an attempt on target in their fifth Premier League defeat of the season.
And it came with Solskjaer changing his system — moving to a back three with two wing-backs.
In the 15 games United have operated in a back three under Solskjaer, they have won eight of them and only lost four.
And although Spurs are in poor form themselves, it has to be said United performed drastically better in the new system than in comparison to what fans have seen in recent weeks.
And Robson has praised Solskjaer for the move.
Speaking to the club's official website, former midfield great said: "I think it [the new formation] worked well and I think it suits a lot of the players in our squad. But the main thing is that is made us look more solid and compact as a team.
"And that is what we had to get back to, those basics of being defensively very good. We know we have got players who are always going to score goals on the counter attack and I thought that worked well."
Fans have been heavily critical of Solskjaer's team selection in recent weeks. And although he changed the shape of the team, Fred and McTominay — who have been singled out by some fans this season — remained in the team, with the latter winning man of the match.
Speaking on McTominay, Robson said: "Scott had a group of players around him, we were organised and disciplined in our approach, and that helped Scott to perform in the way we know he can.
"He wasn't isolated, which in the Liverpool and Leicester game, our midfield players were getting isolated, then the back four were isolated, people were creating far too many chances against us, so the game really helped Scott. But the team ethic was just a lot better."
Their next opponents, Atalanta, use a back three and it is possible that Solskjaer could retain the formation against Manchester City at Old Trafford next week.
