Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel slams Jamie Carragher for Cristiano Ronaldo verdict

Peter Schmeichel has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo is a 'marquee signing' for Manchester United in a response to Jamie Carragher.

Ronaldo's return to United from Juventus was made official on deadline day in a deal worth an initial €15million, rising to €23m.

The 36-year-old is set to stay in Manchester until 2023, although the contract does have the option of a third year, and Ronaldo will wear his iconic number seven shirt during his second stint at the club - he's in contention to make his second debut at the weekend.

While United fans and media alike have mostly marvelled at Ronaldo's homecoming, former Liverpool player Carragher, who played against Ronaldo for the Reds' rivals, thinks the move could have a 'negative effect' on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

"I've never seen so many ex-Manchester United players almost looking love-struck by the sign of Cristiano Ronaldo, so it's a huge moment for them," Carragher told CBS.

"He is one of the greatest players of all time, no doubt, but I actually think it may have a negative effect on Manchester United."

Schmeichel wasn't going to let Carragher's remark go unchallenged, though.

What do you think of Carragher's verdict? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

"There's a word that you said: 'I think it will have'," Schmeichel passionately responded.

"I think you should say, 'I hope there is a negative effect'. It's a big, big difference. I don't think there is a negative effect in that signing.

"I think it's a marquee signing. It's one of the best signings that the club has made in 10 years, and it's something we as fans, we've been hoping for something of this calibre."
