Manchester United legend Paul Scholes gives damning verdict on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer substitutions vs Young Boys

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer "missed a trick" during the side's 2-1 Champions League loss to Young Boys.

United's campaign got off to a nightmare start as Jordan Siebatcheu’s stoppage-time strike earned Young Boys a famous victory after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's first-half red card in Switzerland.

The result sees United already fall off the pace as they attempt to emerge from the Champions League group stages after failing to do so last season.

Last season the club similarly lost in the group stages when they visited Istanbul Basaksehir, the team many would have earmarked as an opportunity for a precious away win.

Solskjaer's men lost 2-1 in Turkey and the dropped points proved crucial as the side fell into last season's Europa League.

Following the loss to Young Boys, BT Sport pundit and ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand was scathing in his criticism of the performance.

He said: "It’s Basaksheir all over again. We were here last season and rueing mistakes.

"That’s a big mistake at the end of the game from Jesse who done really well at the weekend. Just goes to show wherever you go in Europe it's tough.

"You have to be on your game. You have to be mentally tuned in. Yeah, they started well and a decision in the game can change it. It was a bad touch, a bad tackle then the game turned on its head totally."

While the loss will leave United disappointed not to have put points on the board in their opening game, club legend Paul Scholes has said it is 'not a complete disaster', although he criticised the changes made by Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.

Scholes said: "It’s not a complete disaster. Not ideal obviously you’d like to go away and win.

"Jesse will be disappointed, it all stands from the sending off in the first half. United were quite comfortable up until that point.

"I do think United probably missed a trick, they couldn’t get out their half they were so deep.

"I think he should’ve brought more pace on earlier in Martial or Greenwood, they didn’t do that and they’ve paid the ultimate price."
