Manchester United legend makes huge stadium claim that should make Spurs fans very excited

Tottenham Hotspur play their second ever game at their new stadium in the Champions League against Manchester City.

Rio Ferdinand is among the BT Sport pundits in north London for the game and along with host Gary Lineker and fellow pundit Glen Hoddle was given a look at the new ground ahead of kick off.

All of them were extremely impressed with the new stadium as they stood on the touchline in the build up to the game.

Harry Kane outlines the most important thing for Tottenham vs Man City in the Champions League

Hoddle was particularly impressed when comparing it to other modern stadiums, he said: "What it’s got about it which I love as well is it’s a football stadium.

"It’s near to the pitch. It’s like the old Lane. They’re right on top of you.

"The way it’s been built, it goes up. It doesn’t go away from you and as players that is fantastic to play in those kind of conditions and have that atmosphere."

But it isn't the Spurs legend's comments that should really excite Tottenham fans, it is the view of former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand that ought to catch the eye.

Ferdinand spoke about the importance of winning the opening game against Crystal Palace, before going on to suggest that the stadium could become an important place for Spurs in Mauricio Pochettino's continued drive to take the club further.

Rafael van der Vaart makes bold Champions League prediction - and Spurs fans will love it

He said: "That first result was vital because if you don’t win that game, you lose that game, everyone starts saying ‘Is this the ground for them? Have they got used to it? Are they scared of playing here?’

"So that was a big hurdle to get over in the first game but this is going to be another one.

"If they get a result here, this place could become a fortress very, very quickly."

After effectively playing every game away from home for almost two seasons and still competing in a variety of competitions the prospect of having a home 'fortress' is one that should interest Spurs fans.
