Manchester United legend Andy Cole believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are 'still a few years away' from winning the Premier League title.
The Red Devils return to league action this weekend against Leicester City following a difficult start to the campaign, which has seen Solskjaer's side draw with Wolves and Southampton, while facing defeat at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace.
That raises the pressure ahead of some stern tests in September, where United clash with Leicester, West Ham and Arsenal, as well as kicking off their campaign in the Europa League and League Cup.
If United are to win a trophy this season, then Cole 's comments suggest that he believes a focus on cup competitions should be the priority - as he feels they are a long way off going toe-to-toe with their rivals at the top of the table.
"I genuinely believe we're still a few years away. We've just got to keep improving, keep bringing in better players and just try and improve season by season, because the two teams at the top - Liverpool and Manchester City - they're pulling away from everyone," he told Sky Sports .
"I was in a team at Manchester United where we were doing exactly the same thing and in the end, everyone else closed the gap.
"It's a case of just keep persevering, keep improving season by season and closing the gap."
