Manchester United legend explains why now is 'not the time' to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson insists now is not the time for United to turn their back on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and show him the exit door.

Calls for the Norwegian to be axed have increased ten-fold following United's dismal 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

A hat-trick from the in-form Mohamed Salah and solitary strikes from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota blew United away, so much so that they were 5-0 down with 40 minutes left to play.

Whilst the players do have to take their share of the blame, so does Solskjaer. His tactical decisions have become more and more questionable in recent weeks, as proven by United's current run of four Premier League games without a win.

Although an increasing number of United fans are calling for a change, former midfielder Robson believes United need to stick by Solskjaer, insisting a managerial change just brings more upheaval for everyone to deal with.

"This was embarrassing but you can’t say it hasn’t been coming," Robson told the Daily Mail. "The pressing game that United have tried to adopt just isn’t working.

"The players are not adjusting to whatever Ole is asking them to do and the system needs to change. The best performances from this team in recent seasons have come from being compact, strong defensively and hitting teams on the counter attack.

"But it’s not the time to sack Ole. I do believe he will keep his job.

"It’s easy to clamour for the manager to go after such a painful defeat but change now causes more upheaval.

"The club have found that changes every couple of years just don’t work and who do you replace him with? I’m not sure there’s a candidate who can make such a significant difference without causing major disruption again.

"We have to accept Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are still a way ahead of us. That gap, for me, would close if we changed our system."

Following Sunday's defeat, only a handful of United players have spoken out on the performance, either via post-match interviews or their social media channels.

Club captain Harry Maguire faced the forefront of the criticism, speaking to the media immediately after the full time whistle.

"Harry Maguire has apologised on behalf of the players and they will have to regroup and admit they have to work a damn sight harder," Robson added.

"To be a Manchester United player isn’t just about winning the odd game, it’s about winning trophies and if you can’t do that then you’re just talking the talk. There’s no room for talk any more — this needs actions.

"Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t the issue. He’s come with a passion to win trophies and it’s up to his team-mates to show they are up to the task too. It must be a watershed moment for United."
