Manchester United legend Eric Cantona to receive special Uefa award

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 UEFA President's Award.

The accolade is awarded to recognise the outstanding achievements, professional excellence and exemplary personal qualities of a former player.

Cantona is set to receive the award on Thursday as part of the ceremony surrounding the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco.

Uefa President Aleksander Čeferin personally selected the United legend for the accolade and cited the Frenchman's commitment to improving the lives of others following the conclusion of his football career as a key factor in the decision.

"This award not only recognises his career as a player of the highest calibre, but also honours him for the person he is – a man who refuses compromise, who stands up for his values, who speaks his mind and in particular, puts his heart and his soul into supporting the causes he believes in," said the Uefa President.

Čeferin and Cantona are both supporters of the Common Goal initiative which has been co-founded by current United midfielder Juan Mata.

The cause funds high-impact football charities worldwide and sees all members contribute 1% of their annual salary to the project.

Cantona will become the third former United player to receive the award joining an illustrious list which already includes both David Beckham and Sir Bobby Charlton.
