Interim Salford City boss Paul Scholes admits the defeat against Port Vale was 'difficult to take' for the Ammies but was pleased the League Two side took on board his messages from training and saw signs to be positive about.
The Salford co-owner is currently in the dugout at the Peninsula Stadium on a temporary basis after the midweek sacking of previous Ammies boss Graham Alexander.
For his first game in charge of Salford - which he co-owns with Class of 92 teammates Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and David Beckham and businessman Peter Lim - the Valiants claimed all three points thanks to Cristian Montano's late goal.
Ian Henderson had early seen a penalty parried straight back to him by Vale goalkeeper Scott Brown and then fired over the open goal.
Salford's day was also marred by midfielder Darron Gibson's injury, with the Irishman being taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.
And Scholes admits the defeat was 'difficult to take'.
He told the club's media team: "I thought from just being in for a few days they took on board what we were trying to do and we played some really good football at times.
"Obviously we missed the penalty and the rebound and we missed a good chance towards the end as well. I wasn’t too displeased with the team, I thought they took everything on board and tried to play the way we wanted to play.
"Obviously the result isn’t the right one that we wanted and with this league it gives you a chance to move on straight away with playing Saturday and Tuesday night. We have to bounce back from this and hopefully beat Southend on Tuesday.
“I’d rather see goals go in. We’ve created chances with the quality that’s in this team, especially in the forward line, you’d expect that.
"Hopefully you’d expect a couple of goals from that but today wans’t to be and you come to these places and they make it difficult for you.
"It’s not going to be easy and you’re going to have to work for what you get. We didn’t manage to get anything today and we’re disappointed. We can’t think about this for too long because we’ve got Tuesday to get on to."
