Manchester United left to regret £25m mistake as Dutch star shines on international stage

You know things are bad when even the international break isn't enough to escape the mistakes being made at Manchester United.

Like most United fans, I spent the international break furiously throwing my remote at the television as Harry Maguire decided to turn into Pele, yet the Netherlands' 2-0 victory over Norway on Tuesday night proved to be just as frustrating a watch.

Former United manager Louis van Gaal and his team celebrated securing World Cup qualification with the win, but there's one particular individual who deserves a lot of credit for helping his side secure top spot in Group G, and it's someone all United fans will be familiar with.

Memphis Depay was brought to Old Trafford by Van Gaal in 2015. Prior to his arrival, Depay had enjoyed an excellent 2014 World Cup under Van Gaal and there was real optimism that the pair could rekindle their fruitful relationship in Manchester.

Things looked bright for Depay early on in his Old Trafford stay. He was a tricky, intricate winger - the kind of player United fans love to watch - and he created a great partnership with Luke Shaw. On top of this, he worked well with Wayne Rooney in an attack that promised so much but ultimately produced very little.

The double leg break suffered by Shaw in the Champions League against Depay's former club PSV Eindhoven meant the Dutchman had lost his left-side partner, while his relationship with Rooney also started to suffer and he was criticised for slowing the game down when United needed runners in behind.

The form of both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial meant Depay suddenly became something of an afterthought at United as he struggled to cement his place in the starting XI.

Van Gaal was eventually sacked and when Jose Mourinho replaced him Depay hardly got a kick. He was eventually sold to Lyon where his switch to a more central role saw him flourish into one of Europe's top marksmen.

In total, he scored 76 goals and notched 55 assists in 178 appearances for the French outfit - some going for a player who had looked lost at United.

This summer, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer and has so far scored six goals and provided two assists in 16 appearances. Considering how poor the Catalan side have been this season, Depay has churned out some pretty impressive numbers.

Depay confirmed the Netherlands' place at the 2022 World Cup on Tuesday night with a late goal, with his 10 World Cup qualifying outings in the campaign gleaning 12 goals and six assists. The strike against Norway was his 38th for his country, meaning he's just 12 behind Robin van Persie's all-time record - not bad company at all.

Personally, I feel United made a massive mistake with Depay. Just imagine what could have been if we'd turned him into a forward.

It's a shame things didn't work out for him at United because I'd love to see him back at the club. He'd have provided a very different option to the ones currently at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's disposal and would almost certainly be ahead of Martial in the pecking order.

I'll always wish him well because he's a red at heart, yet I can't help but think about what might have been.
