Manchester United issue update on Paul Pogba contract situation

Manchester United remain in talks with Paul Pogba over a new contract despite speculation the midfielder has set his heart on a move to Paris St-Germain.

There were reports Pogba had turned United's offer of a new deal this week and with his current contract expiring next summer the club be forced to cash in now rather than lose him for nothing in 12 months.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists talks between the club and the player remain live and having spoken to the France international he believes Pogba is looking forward to the new season at Old Trafford.

"Talks are ongoing between Paul’s representative and the club representatives all the dialogue I’ve had with Paul is that he’s looking forward to the season," Solskjaer said after United's 4-2 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

Pogba expressed his desire to leave United two years ago and his future has been a contentious issue ever since, but his favoured options of a move to Real Madrid and Juventus have closed up at the moment, with both clubs struggling financially as a result of the pandemic.

Last December his agent Mino Raiola said Pogba wouldn't sign a new contract at United and wanted out, but the club have opened talks over trying to extend his stay.

But PSG could offer Pogba a route out of Old Trafford if he is determined to depart this summer. The 28-year-old is due back at pre-season training a week on Monday after impressing for France in their European Championship campaign.

Solskjaer refused to be drawn on the intricacies of the talks between Pogba and the club but he is hopeful he will remain a part of his squad next season.

"There's always speculation about Paul, the talks between Paul and his representatives, I'm not in the detail of every single one, I've got nothing to say really, about that," he said.

"There's always speculation about Paul and always clubs being interested and we've seen Paul at his best, Paul knows what we feel about it and I've enjoyed my time working with him and hopefully we can continue working together."
