Manchester United issue strong statement after Everton women's game called off

Manchester United have said they are "disappointed" in the decision-making that led to tonight's game with Everton Women to be called off.

The Blues were due to host United in a Continental Tyres Cup clash this evening (7pm) at their Walton Hall Park home.

But Everton have this morning confirmed that the Group C clash has been called off due to "safety concerns" after damage caused by high winds.

Everton say the 'expect' the tie to be rearranged.

But United have issued a strongly worded statement today , criticising how the decision was reached and that it came within 24 hours of the kick-off.

A club statement read, in part: "Manchester United is disappointed with both the process and the timing involved in the decision".

Manager Casey Stoney added: "I must make it clear that we as a club wanted this game to be played and were accommodating in the options that we put forward."

United also seem to direct their frustrations at the Football Association, who they say gave Everton "permission" to called the game off.
