Manchester United issue statement on Marcus Rashford injury

Marcus Rashford is set to miss the first two months of the new season as he prepares to undergo shoulder surgery.

The Manchester United forward played through the European Championship for England, despite carrying shoulder and foot injuries.

Rashford and United have agreed his shoulder injury should be addressed and he is likely to be out until October.

"Following consultation between Marcus, the manager, club medical staff and specialists, Marcus will undergo surgery imminently to resolve his shoulder injury.

“He will now focus on his rehabilitation in order to return as soon as possible."

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Wednesday night: "With Marcus, we'll probably make a decision in next few days when we check him up, the last decision-making, what's best for him and best for the club has to be considered."

Despite the absence of Rashford, United are expected to have Jadon Sancho, Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood and Juan Mata available for the season opener against Leeds United on August 14.

Winger Daniel James has appeared in pre-season, Anthony Martial is stepping up his recovery from a knee injury and rookie forward Anthony Elanga has scored in both of the last friendly fixtures.

Right-sided forward Amad is on international duty with the Ivory Coast at the Olympics but Facundo Pellistri has shone in pre-season.
