Manchester United issue statement in response to racist abuse of Paul Pogba

Manchester United have issued a statement in response to the racist abuse that was aimed at Paul Pogba on Monday night.

Pogba was targeted on social media after missing a penalty for United during their 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

"Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse aimed at Paul Pogba last night and we utterly condemn it," a United statement read.

"The individuals who expressed these views do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the vast majority of our fans condemn this on social media also.

"Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative.

"We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases."

Harry Maguire weighed in with his take on the issue and called for stricter regulations to be put in place on social media.

"Disgusting. Social media need to do something about it...," Maguire tweeted on Tuesday morning. "Every account that is opened should be verified by a passport/driving licence. Stop these pathetic trolls making numerous accounts to abuse people."

The unsavoury incident came just days after Tammy Abraham was racially abused following his missed penalty in Chelsea's Super Cup defeat by Liverpool.

Twitter's hateful conduct policy says the company prohibits 'targeting individuals with repeated slurs, tropes or other content that intends to dehumanize, degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes about a protected category.'
