Manchester United issue injury update on Alex Telles

Alex Telles will miss the start of the new season after being ruled out until September with an ankle injury.

The Manchester United left-back started the first pre-season friendly against Derby but then picked up the injury during the club's training camp at Pennyhill Park last week.

Telles missed the friendly with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday and has now been ruled out for just over a month after the damage was shown to be worst than first feared.

The 28-year-old slipped and twisted his ankle and his absence will be a blow, with Luke Shaw only due to return from holiday next week after his involvement in the European Championship with England.

“Unfortunately, it’s worse news on Alex Telles than we hoped for, his ankle injury is a little bit more severe than we hoped and he’ll be out for a little spell at least, the whole of August I would think,” Solskjaer told the club website.

In his absence Brandon Williams started against QPR and played 78 minutes against the Championship side. With Shaw still away the 20-year-old could continue to get his chance in pre-season and he's likely to start against Brentford at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

“That is football. We’ve got kids wanting to play of course. Brandon has done well in the left-back position,” said Solskjaer.

The United boss has already confirmed that Diogo Dalot and Donny van de Beek will return to the squad against the Bees, but Dean Henderson and Bruno Fernandes won't be ready in time.

"We’re adding more and more players now of course. Dean is back in training which is good for us, he won’t be ready for the Brentford game," he said.

“Diogo and Donny have trained and they’re ready to play a part in the game, I would think they’ll be subs.

“Bruno is back in training. He’s not ready to join the Brentford game yet, but he’s not too far."
