Manchester United international round-up as Lingard shines and De Gea's frustration continues

Manchester United's international stars were in action on Thursday night across the globe.

With the Premier League on a two-week hiatus for World Cup qualifiers and other fixtures, several United players were in action at the start of the road to Qatar 2022.

England's 5-0 victory over San Marino offered the chance for Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard to gain some first-team minutes.

Scott McTominay, David de Gea and Victor Lindelof were also in action as Scotland, Spain and Sweden kicked-off their respective World Cup qualifying charges.

With all this in mind, here's a round-up of how United's players got on.

Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard

England began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 5-0 victory over minnows San Marino at Wembley.

First international goals for James Ward-Prowse and debutant Ollie Watkins were sandwiched by a brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and a goal from Raheem Sterling.

For United's men, neither Maguire nor Shaw were involved, though both were named on the bench, while Lingard started and played the full match as just-reward for his displays on loan at West Ham.

Lingard was also named man of the match on his return to the Three Lions fold.

Scott McTominay

Scotland were also beginning their road to Qatar against Austria at Hampden Park.

A fantastic overhead kick from Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn rescued a point with five minutes remaining for Steve Clarke's side, as they drew 2-2.

McTominay played the full 90 minutes and was awarded man of the match for his display in the centre of midfield.

David de Gea

Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Greece in World Cup qualifying, with Alvaro Morata's opener cancelled out by a second-half penalty.

For De Gea, it was a watching brief, with Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon selected in goal once again.

De Gea hasn't started Spain's last three international matches, with Simon conceding twice and keeping one clean sheet.

The United goalkeeper will be hoping for some minutes when Spain face Georgia on Sunday and host Kosovo next Wednesday.

Victor Lind elof

For Sweden, their World Cup efforts got off to the perfect start as they beat Georgia 1-0.

Viktor Claesson scored the game's only goal, with Lindelof keeping a clean sheet at the heart of Sweden's back four.

Lindelof enjoyed a fine match, registering 100% tackle success and 93% pass success rate.
