Manchester United interested in Ralf Rangnick as interim manager

Manchester United have shortlisted Ralf Rangnick to take over as interim manager.

United have had their initial approach for Mauricio Pochettino rejected by Paris Saint-Germain but remain confident of appointing the Argentinian as their next permanent manager.

Amid the possibility of PSG keeping Pochettino, United have started conducting interviews for an interim manager's role and have already held discussions with the former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde and former Roma coach Rudi Garcia.

The United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and managing director Richard Arnold did not travel to Spain for the club's 2-0 Champions League win over Villarreal in order to interview candidates.

Rangnick, currently the head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow, is believed to be United's preferred option to manage the club for the rest of the season if they cannot prise Pochettino from PSG.

Rangnick, 63, has primarily coached in Germany and was in charge of Schalke when they were demolished 6-1 on aggregate by United in the 2011 Champions League semi-finals.

The German transitioned into a management role in 2012, becoming Red Bull Salzburg's sporting director but returned to coaching with RB Leipzig in 2015-16 and 2018-19. Rangnick was responsible for Salzburg signing Sadio Mane and brought Joshua Kimmich, Naby Keita, Dayot Upamecano, and Timo Werner to Leipzig.

Rangnick left Leipzig last year after a protracted move to AC Milan collapsed and joined Lokomotiv in the summer.
