Manchester United injury update: Kobbie Mainoo, Patrick Dorgu, Matthijs de Ligt latest news and return dates

Manchester United endured a chastening start to the week as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Leeds and suffered a new injury.

The Red Devils were slow to start at Old Trafford and promptly punished by Noah Okafor’s first-half brace, with Lisandro Martinez’s sending off after the break doing little to help the situation.

The defeat sees United slip off the pace in the race to qualify for the Champions League, and Kobbie Mainoo’s surprise absence from the team sheet through injury will not help matters ahead of next week’s trip to face Chelsea.

With that in mind, here is all the latest Manchester United injury news and potential return dates...

Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo has been a regular under Michael Carrick and is understood to be in talks over a new contract, but the young midfielder was a surprise absentee from the team sheet against Leeds.

It was revealed ahead of kick-off at Old Trafford that he had picked up a knock in training, with Carrick insisting he would not spend long on the sidelines.

“Over the last day or so, Kobbie just had an issue in training,” he told Sky Sports.

“So it seems small but big enough to keep him out tonight. It wasn't worth the risk, to be honest, so we're hoping it's pretty small and it won't be too long.”

It remains to be seen whether he will return in time to face Chelsea next week.

Patrick Dorgu

Patrick Dorgu has been sidelined since suffering a significant hamstring injury in the defeat of Arsenal back in January.

He seems to be closing in on a return, though, having got back on the grass during the international break and attended United’s training camp in Ireland.

It had been hoped that he could feature against Leeds, but that match came too soon for him.

Carrick, though, will hope he can return in the coming weeks to aid United’s push to qualify for the Champions League.

Matthijs de Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt has not played since November as he struggles to recover from a nebulous lower back injury.

Unfortunately for the Dutchman, there is no clarity as to when he might make a comeback.

He did not attend United’s March training camp in Ireland, and Carrick does not seem confident of an imminent return.

He said: “The reason [De Ligt] didn’t come [to Ireland] is he’s not quite on the grass. Patrick came back because he’s further on, but Matta isn’t quite at this stage yet.”

Carrick offered further detail as he spoke last month: “Frustrating for Matta [De Ligt]. He's obviously trying to work towards getting back, but it's just the back issue really that's proving difficult. We'll keep working as hard as we can to get him back as quick as we can.”

Potential return date: Unknown
