Manchester United injury latest as confusion reigns over David de Gea's fitness ahead of Liverpool clash

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea could be set to hand his side a huge fitness boost by being fit to face Liverpool this weekend.

The United stopper limped off an hour into Spain’s 1-1 draw against Sweden on Tuesday night after stretching his right leg while clearing a backpass.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then admitted the next day in an interview with Sky Sports that he expected his goalkeeper to miss the huge clash at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon against Liverpool .

But according to a report in The Times on Friday morning, De Gea has told friends that the extent of the injury will only become apparent after more tests today.

While his boss admitted himself at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning that the injury was not as bad as first feared, although he still expects his number one to miss out.

"I don't expect him to play but it wasn't as bad feared," Solskjaer said.

"When I saw the (Spain) game I thought he would be out until the next international break, because we've had some long-term muscle injuries."

United are also believed to be sweating on the fitness of Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mason Greenwood while Jesse Lingard and Luke Shaw are expected to miss out.

Paul Pogba is also unavailable due to foot and ankle injuries and Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are also sidelined.

United currently sit 15 points adrift of Liverpool, just two points above the drop zone, while the Reds will be looking to make it nine from nine in the Premier League.
