Manchester United injury latest ahead of upcoming FA Cup tie with Aston Villa

Manchester United will be bidding to return to winning ways on Monday evening, as they entertain Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Reds fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford last time out, with Joao Moutinho's goal the only difference between the two sides.

Having not tasted defeat prior to the visit of the West Midlands side, interim boss Ralf Rangnick was forced to make a few minor tweaks to his starting XI.

Defender Phil Jones returned to the side after a two year absence, with his performance arguably one of the stand outs across the evening.

Mason Greenwood was replaced on 60 minutes for the out of sorts Bruno Fernandes of late, with even United's Portuguese play maker failing to make an impact.

With Villa posing yet another tricky test in just 4 days time, it is yet unknown whether the German boss will look to rotate once more as his team aim to progress to the 4th round of this season's competition.

Here's all we know on the injury front ahead of the visit of the Midlanders...

Harry Maguire

Club captain Maguire was forced to miss Monday’s 1-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers with a chest injury and will be assessed once more ahead of the upcoming FA Cup encounter.

Sustaining the injury against Burnley, interim boss Rangnick insisted the England international battled on but was forced to miss out.

“Harry received that kind of injury against Burnley that he could play all throughout the game," interim manager Ralf Rangnick told Sky Sports.

“But he had problems the day after. Until yesterday, we were still hopeful of him being able to play, the same with Eric Bailly, and in both cases it was just a 'no'. Since last night, we knew all three of them were out.”

Victor Lindelof

The Reds were forced to go with a new defensive partnership in the form of Raphael Varane and Phil Jones in the defeat to Wolves, with Lindelof still missing due to recently returning a positive Covid test.

With 10 days now surpassed since the Sweden captain's isolation from the squad, we could expect to see the 27-year-old return against Steven Gerrard's side.

Paul Pogba

French midfielder Pogba is still stepping up his return to action following the hamstring injury he sustained during the last international break.

The 28-year-old has now missed the last two months since suffering the tear and hasn't featured since United's disappointing 5-0 defeat against Liverpool back in October.
