Manchester United in talks with Premier League over Brighton fixture after Covid-19 outbreak

Manchester United are keeping the Premier League informed over the status of their squad after they returned to training at Carrington on Wednesday.

United remain in regular dialogue with the league after Tuesday's game with Brentford was postponed and Saturday's Old Trafford fixture with Brighton could also be called off.

While United are stressing it's too early for a decision to be made over the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, sources don't expect the situation within Ralf Rangnick's squad to have improved by then.

Indeed, it's now unclear whether United might have suffered more positive test results since the initial outbreak within the squad at the weekend.

Some players and first-team staff tested positive on Sunday and when those results were confirmed by PCR tests on Monday, United took the decision to shut down first-team operations at Carrington for 24 hours.

After talks with the Premier League, the scheduled game with Brentford on Tuesday night was called off just before midnight on Monday.

United did reopen Carrington to the first-team on Wednesday morning, with the players reporting for duty for 11am, but only 17 first team players were pictured arriving at the training ground.

On arrival, they had to undertake lateral flow and PCR tests in their car before being given the green light to enter the training ground if those tests were negative, or returned home if they were positive.

Some of the group trained at Carrington under the supervision of Rangnick, while some continued to work on rehabilitation from injuries.

United are in regular contact with the Premier League to keep them informed of the situation but aren't expecting any of the players affected by Covid-19 to be available this weekend.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte and Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers have both confirmed they asked for their match due to take place tomorrow (Thursday) to be called off due to Covid-19 outbreaks at both clubs, only for the Premier League to insist the game had to go ahead.

United's opponents on Saturday, Brighton, have also had issues with positive tests but they will host Wolves at the Amex Stadium tonight.
