Manchester United in talks to sign Edinson Cavani ahead of transfer deadline day

Manchester United are in talks over a possible move for Edinson Cavani ahead of transfer deadline day.

United are still working on a number of deals ahead of Monday's deadline with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believed to be 'desperate' to add another attacking option to his first-team squad.

MEN Sport understand free agent Cavani has been offered to United as he searches for a new club and that initial discussions have already been held over a move for the veteran striker.

Cavani, 33, remains without a club since his previous deal at Paris Saint-Germain expired in the summer and a planned move to Atletico Madrid failed to materialise.

The Uruguayan international would come without the need for a transfer fee this summer but there are some concerns over wage demands following his previous bumper deal with the French champions.

Cavani does not fulfil United's philosophy of signing the best young talents in the transfer window but brings with him an impressive scoring record of 200 goals in 301 appearances for former side PSG.

It is believed United want to sign another striker option before Monday's deadline in order to ease the burden on Anthony Martial up front with loanee Odion Ighalo far down the pecking order.

United moved to sign Ighalo on loan from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua late on January deadline day, but after a promising start he has fallen out of favour since the return of Marcus Rashford from injury.

United made the decision to extend the Nigerian's loan until the end of January 2021 but are still desperate to add a new forward player to help them cope with the packed fixture schedule which lies ahead.

MEN Sport reported earlier in the week United are holding various discussions in an attempt to secure more signings before the transfer deadline.

The club are continuing talks with FC Porto over a possible deal for Brazilian left-back Alex Telles but are running out of time to secure a deal for priority target Jadon Sancho.
