Manchester United in 'secret talks' with Pochettino as Paul Scholes warns about manager choice

Welcome to the United On My Mind daily round-up, where we take a look at some of the best Manchester United stories that you might have missed.

Manchester United are reportedly holding 'secret talks' with Mauricio Pochettino behind the scenes, ahead of a summer move for the ex-Tottenham manager.

But while United discuss one manager, Paul Scholes has criticised his former club about their current choice of manager and said the decision may come back to bite them.

And finally, Anthony Martial was linked with a move to Sevilla over the past few weeks, but the Spanish club have now reportedly cooled their interest.

United in 'secret talks' with Pochettino

United's long-standing admiration for Pochettino is well documented. MEN Sport understands that the club were interested in appointing the Argentinian manager as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's successor but Paris Saint-Germain were reluctant to part ways in the middle of the season.

French outlet Le Parisien, aggregated by Paris Fans, states that while Ralf Rangnick's preferred option to succeed him is Erik ten Hag, members of United's board are still sold on Pochettino becoming the new manager in the summer and are keeping in contact behind closed doors.

Pochettino's position at the French club will greatly depend on how they fare in the Champions League, with Zinedine Zidane touted as a possible replacement if he is to leave.

My view: United wanting Pochettino is one of the worst kept secrets in football. However if the deal hinges on PSG parting ways with the Argentinian, then the last thing United need is to be haggling in the summer for their manager while transfer targets and precious planning time goes by.

My preferred choice is Ten Hag, but overall I just want a manager with a sense of direction and a clear vision to get the club back on track.

Scholes issues manager warning

Talking on BT Sport, Scholes has questioned United's choice to pass on Antonio Conte, and has warned that it is a decision that could come back to bite the club.

He said: “Manchester United should have the best available out there employed as their manager and they haven’t got that, which I find astonishing. It should be one of the top five managers in the world. Tuchel, Klopp, Guardiola, no chance you can get them. But Antonio Conte? The timing looked ideal.

“You’ve seen what he’s done at Tottenham with a squad that is nowhere near as good as United’s. I think United missed a trick with him. I think they could probably still get him from Tottenham. I think he could do something special here.”

My view: The absolutely ridiculous belief that United have enough pulling power to make Conte leave Spurs after only a few months aside, the Italian has hardly been working miracles at the north London side so far.

Rangnick may not have the pedigree or as good a CV as Conte, but it is one of the first decisions the club has made in a long time that has United's future in mind. It may not seem it currently, but it was probably the right call.

Sevilla cool on Martial

90mins are reporting that Sevilla have decided to cool their interest in wantaway United striker Martial after a loan deal did not seem feasible.

The French forward current wages at Old Trafford are thought to be a stumbling block.

Martial has reportedly spoken to Rangnick personally and expressed his desire to leave, but a deal will only be sanctioned if a club meets United's valuation of the player.

My view: Where did all go wrong for Martial? Once one of Europe's most highly-rated talents, now unwanted by United due to his inconsistent form. Other clubs also seem wary about sanctioning a deal for the forward.

Hopefully United are able to find a move for the player soon for the good of everyone involved.
