Manchester United 'identify Wan Bissaka alternative'

Manchester United are considering a summer move for the Juventus right-back Joao Cancelo, according to reports.

The Reds are believed to be in the market for a full-back and a centre-back this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer begins surgery on a squad of players who have failed to deliver a trophy over the past two seasons.

United were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Barcelona last week amid a run of seven defeats in nine games that also saw United dumped out of the FA Cup by Wolves in the last eight of the competition.

Club captain Antonio Valencia, 33, is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, while Matteo Darmian is understood to be eyeing a move back to his native Italy after four years at United.

Cancelo, a 24-year-old Portugal international, has made 30 appearances during his first campaign at Juventus after moving from Valencia last summer for a fee in the region of £40 million. The Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has also been linked with a move to United, but Cancelo could represent a cheaper option, TuttoMercatoWeb report.

Meanwhile, United will have to fend off renewed competition from Real Madrid to land the England winger Jadon Sancho, according to a report in the Independent.

The Reds are believed to be working on a summer transfer strategy that will centre around young, British talent as the club's hierarchy look to restore a balance to a first-team squad that retains the hallmarks of the contrasting styles deployed by Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

Sancho, 19, made his England debut this season after impressing during his second season in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.

The winger remains the top assist-maker in Europe, level with Lionel Messi, and will command a £100 million fee in the summer, which Madrid are said to be prepared to meet.
