Manchester United identify key to improving Premier League form

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Mason Greenwood could be key to Manchester United rediscovering their domestic form after they moved into the top half of the Premier League table.

United won their fourth league game of the campaign with a 1-0 win over 18th-placed West Brom via a Bruno Fernandes penalty but Solskjaer admitted the performance was 'not a step in the right direction'.

Solskjaer started with the same attacking quartet that helped United beat Everton in their previous fixture but Fernandes, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all underwhelmed and the presence of Mata on the right wing again highlighted United's problem position.

Greenwood claimed 18 goals last term and established himself as a first-teamer on the right of a three-pronged attack with Rashford and Martial but has missed the last two games through illness.

“We need to improve," Solskjaer said. "We need to get more flow and rhythm to our game, be more clinical, take our chances.

"We’re looking forward to having Mason back, fit again and well, so hopefully we can hit some form like we did toward the end of last season. We've got plenty of quality and sometimes the most difficult thing is to keep it simple and sometimes today we wanted to overcomplicate things.

"We want players to seize opportunity but we need more flow, rhythm, make the opposition move. It could have been simpler today. I know the players have been away on international duty - we just had this morning to prepare for this game - so hopefully now we’ll have three or four months together. And its about sticking together, sticking to the way we want to play the game and improve every time.

"Defensively, we’re getting there, definitely. Working hard, closing down, not conceding many chances. we created enough chances to win this comfortably but we need to be more clinical."

Greenwood could return when United host Istanbul Basaksehir in their fourth Champions League group stage game on Thursday.
