Felix Brych will be the man in the middle for Manchester United's visit to Villarreal on Tuesday night but the Reds will be hoping they can end a losing trend with him as the match official.
He has been in charge of 10 matches involving United, with the Red Devils losing three of the last four matches Brych has officiated including the Europa League semi-final second leg defeat to AS Roma last season.
Despite the defeat at the Stadio Olimpico, Solskjaer's side did progress to the final where they were beaten by Villarreal on penalties.
United need to at least draw in order to keep their fate in their hands, but a defeat could land serious repercussions for Michael Carrick and the outlook for this season.
The only match involving English opposition Brych has been involved in this season is Chelsea's 1-0 win over Malmo last time out.
Throughout his time in charge of United's European fixtures, he has awarded four penalties, three in the Reds favour and one to the opposition.
The one dismissal he has issued was at Nemanja Vidic's expense in the 2-0 win over SC Otelul Galati in 2011 which Sir Alex Ferguson felt was harsh, he said: "I can understand the referee's interpretation.
"Maybe it's a bit different in Germany but I thought it was a little harsh. It was certainly a booking."
In his 13 matches so far this season, he has issued 50 yellow cards and one penalty.
But the German referee isn't shy of criticism from Premier League managers as he came under fire from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp last season in their first-leg defeat to Real Madrid, who felt winger Sadio Mane wasn't being protected.
Klopp said: "The situation with Sadio today, the ref I don't know. Was it something personal?
"Whenever Sadio went down he didn't get anything to be honest. I thought he was unfair with Sadio, that's what I told him.
"He didn't lose us the game but you need just an okay ref."
