Manchester United hint at plan to cope without Marcus Rashford

Mason Greenwood is set for a more prominent role at Manchester United with Marcus Rashford sidelined for up to two months.

Rashford suffered a stress fracture to his back in the FA Cup third round replay win over Wolves on Wednesday night and has been ruled out for a minimum of six weeks.

The 22-year-old is United's top scorer with 19 goals and is certain to miss the FA Cup fourth round trip to Tranmere Rovers or Watford, the League Cup semi-final second leg at Manchester City, the Premier League fixture at Chelsea on February 17 and both Europa League round-of-32 legs against Club Brugge.

United are considering signing a striker on a five-month loan deal to offset the loss of Rashford but Greenwood, 18, is likely to get more playing time. The forward has scored nine in 27 appearances for United this season and could return to the line-up against Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

"Marcus suffered a stress fracture against Wolverhampton," Solskjaer said. "I don't know how long he will be out for, we will give him enough time to heal. Normally six weeks before you get going slightly probably, and then he will need time to get match-fit again.

"We've just got to [cope] for a while. He's been absolutely fantastic all season. We had a similar spell with Anthony out for eight weeks and Mason got a few more games, has got more experience, Juan [Mata]'s getting back to his best for me and we'll just have to deal with it."

Greenwood came on as a substitute in United's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, where Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring from a 14th minute corner. United were criticised for their preparations at the set-piece after left wing-back Brandon Williams was tasked with marking the imperious Van Dijk.

"It didn't go to plan," Solskjaer understatedly explained. "They work in a good block and you've got to be against Virgil because he's one of the best headers of the ball. And when he gets a free run, that's never easy to defend against.

"So disappointing and the last kick of the game [from Mohamed Salah] is also disappointing but we had to send absolutely everyone up there after half-an-hour of some good chances and pressure from us."
