Manchester United hero has message over Spurs transfer targets James Maddison and Jack Grealish

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes James Maddison would be a good signing for his old side.

The Leicester City playmaker has been linked with both Manchester United and Tottenham, among others, in recent transfer windows after impressing for the Foxes.

But he is not the only player both clubs have been named as potential suitors for, with Aston Villa star Jack Grealish also strongly linked with Manchester United and Tottenham.

But Stam has delivered a message for his old side about who he would prefer to see join Manchester United this summer.

Aston Villa V Tottenham Hotspur: Match in a minute

“Both are great players. I like [James] Maddison a lot. He’s a midfield player who is very comfortable on the ball and he’s always going into certain positions where he becomes an extra man. He can go by players and score goals as well as creating opportunities for others," Stam said, speaking exclusively to 888sport.

“Jack Grealish I see more as a winger coming in. For United they need to look more at direct wingers with pace going forward, instead of a player like Grealish. Who knows, he might be an important player because he is good in tight areas. But for me, it’s Maddison for United.”

Stam has also given his verdict on Bruno Fernandes, who was a transfer target for Tottenham last summer, but ended up joining Manchester United in January.

Stam played more than 125 times for the Red Devils between 1998 and 2002, helping Manchester United win three Premier League titles.

He was part of the United side that won the treble in 1999, which also included them winning the FA Cup and Champions League.

Stam has managed in England and Holland since retiring from playing, with a stint at Reading between 2016 and 2018.
