Manchester United have something they haven't had since Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo's penultimate season at Manchester United consolidated his position as a generational talent.

The floodlights at Old Trafford have witnessed players become immortal over the decades, but when Ronaldo delivered one of the best individual seasons in Premier League history in 2007/2008, it was something different - it was something very, very special.

While it had already become clear that Sir Alex Ferguson was nurturing a rare talent, Ronaldo fired United to the league title that campaign and the Portuguese somehow reached yet another level when scoring 42 goals across all competitions.

At 23 years old, Ronaldo surpassed George Best's record of 32 goals from a winger in one season, but it was the style in which he was performing that was simply captivating, he had developed into the ultimate athlete and he was a force to be reckoned with.

His ruthless winning mentality and desire to improve was also evident, though, and naturally, when Ronaldo joined Real Madrid in 2009 it was impossible to replace him.

Since Ronaldo's departure, outstanding talents have come and gone at United, trying to emulate the talismanic magic Ronaldo had provided and they had all fell short - that is until Bruno Fernandes arrived from Sporting Lisbon last year.

There's something rather poetic about Fernandes and Ronaldo both coming from Sporting Lisbon, although like Ronaldo, Fernandes was never guaranteed to be a success in Manchester, despite his wonderful goal and assist record in Portugal's top division.

Fernandes, however, has now given something to United that they've craved since Ronaldo left for the Santiago Bernabeu.

How many goals can Fernandes score this season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

The midfielder's performance against Leeds was world-class. Netting a hat-trick on the opening day of the season was a statement outlining that United's top goalscorer from last season is back, hungry and ready to fight for the title.

Since February 2020, no player has recorded more direct goals involvements (goals and assists combined) than Fernandes (48) who has Harry Kane (44), Mohamed Salah (41) and Son Heung-min (35) all trailing behind his impeccable standards.

There's no arguing that Ronaldo was the best player in the league for United and, while it's ultimately subjective who fans and pundits believed holds that honour now, Fernandes' world-class statistics and performances speak louder than any words can.
