Manchester United have been told who to hire instead of Mauricio Pochettino

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe doesn't believe Mauricio Pochettino is the right man to take Manchester United forward.

The former Tottenham Hotspur boss has been heavily linked with the vacant role ever since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday morning.

Pochettino is currently in Manchester as his Paris Saint-Germain side take on Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The MEN understands that United have seen an initial approach for Pochettino rejected and have since turned their attention to Ralf Rangnick with discussions also held with the former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde and former Roma coach Rudi Garcia as options for an interim manager role.

However, Sharpe would rather see United make a move for Ajax manager Erik ten Hag or Bayern Munich's Julian Nagelsmann.

"Pochettino I think is favourite. I'm actually not sure if he's the right man for the job at the moment," he said on

"I think maybe the guy from Ajax, Ten Hag, he looks decent.

"Nagelsmann from Bayern Munich would be a good option.

"It's a very difficult decision and one that they desperately need to get right after so many managers having not worked over the last sort of 5-10 years, so really tricky.

"I don't think it will [Zinedine] Zidane because I think he would have already been there, he is the only one out of the job.

"I think with what's happened over the last few days, I think he would have already been on his way if he was going to take the job.

"I think we can rule him out."

Michael Carrick is currently in charge on a temporary basis and got off to a winning start, beating Villarreal 2-0 in the Champions League with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.
