Manchester United great Wayne Rooney pinpoints Mason Greenwood's "rare" attribute

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is not a natural goalscorer, unlike his teammate Mason Greenwood who has a "rare" knack for scoring goals.

Both players were crucial for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season with Greenwood making a huge impact in his breakthrough campaign for the Reds.

The 18-year-old ended the season with ten Premier League goals, becoming only the third player to reach such a tally aged 18 or under.

As a result of his impressive showings, Greenwood was called up to the senior England squad for the first time ahead of Nations League fixtures against Iceland and Denmark.

Rooney compared the youngster to Harry Kane due to his finishing ability but believes he is a completely different player to his teammate Rashford.

"Greenwood made 40 appearances in Europe and the Premier League in 2019-20, compared with [Phil] Foden’s 28," he wrote in his column for The Times.

"He is probably the best finisher at United already at the age of 18 and in goalscorers you can just see it from day one — Harry Kane and Michael Owen had the knack and it’s the same with Greenwood.

"As I’ve said before, I wasn’t a natural scorer.

"That knack is rare and Gareth needs a proper deputy for Kane, someone he can slot in if Harry is injured or suspended.

"For me, Marcus Rashford is not such a natural scorer and nor is Tammy Abraham. But Greenwood can be that player."
