Manchester United great Sir Alex Ferguson to pay tribute to Notts County legend Jimmy Sirrel

Sir Alex Ferguson is set to record a tribute to Notts County's legendary manager Jimmy Sirrel to mark the 50th-year anniversary of his appointment.

Sirrel is regarded as Notts' best manager of all time having guided the club from Division Four to the top flight.

Sirrel was appointed on November 8 in 1969 and to mark the anniversary, Ferguson will pay tribute to his friend and his fellow Scot at a special dinner at Meadow Lane in October.

The Manchester United great had been invited to attend the event  that will see legendary striker Les Bradd also inducted into the Magpies' hall of fame.

But after suffering a brain haemorrhage last year, Ferguson has been advised to limit the the number of public appearances.

Instead, he will record a video that will pay tribute to Sirrel and his achievements.

On the same night the Magpies will also toast Tommy Lawton 100 years after he was born.

The former Notts and England striker spearheaded the club's promotion to the old Second Division by scoring 31 goals in the 1949-50 season.

The event will begin at 7pm, with dinner commencing at 7.30pm.

Tickets costing £30, will be available from the club shop and online from Saturday 14 September, when the Magpies welcome Halifax Town to Meadow Lane.
