Manchester United great Sir Alex Ferguson gives verdict on Steven Gerrard as a manager

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Steven Gerrard has done a 'magnificent' job as Rangers manager.

Gerrard, often one of Ferguson and Manchester United's greatest foes during his time at Liverpool, hung up his boots in 2017.

After a year spent managing Liverpool's Under-18 side, Gerrard took over the job at Rangers and was given the near-impossible task of breaking Celtic's dominance in Scotland.

Against all the odds, however, he managed it this season as Rangers, who are as of yet undefeated, romped to the title to prevent their Glasgow rivals from winning a historic 10 titles in a row.

Ferguson, who grew up a Rangers fan and played for the club, has been impressed with the job Gerrard has done at Ibrox.

“Oh, he’s done magnificent. He really has, both on and off the field," Ferguson told the Guardian.

"A press interview can lose you your job in management. But Steven’s press conferences are fantastic. He’s cool, he’s composed, he gives the right answers. He’s really top because it’s an art.”

Meanwhile, Ferguson admitted that, in the closing stages of the 1999 Champions League final, he didn't still believe United would win it.

Famously, two goals in the final three minutes from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw United defeat Bayern Munich in dramatic circumstances and complete a historic treble.

“No chance!" Ferguson said when asked if he thought United would win the game as the clock ticked down. "I was thinking what I’d say to the players: ‘You had a great season.’ But then we won it.”
