Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand trolls Man City over Champions League ban

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand trolled Manchester City after UEFA banned the Blues from European competition for the next two seasons.

Friday's announcement sent shock waves through the footballing world, with City also facing potential implications in the Premier League.

City have announced they will appeal the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport and remain confident that UEFA's decision will not be the final ruling on the case.

If the ban is upheld, it could have massive implications for United, as a fifth-place finish in the Premier League this season would guarantee the return of Champions League football to Old Trafford next term.

United currently sit ninth in the table, four points behind Sheffield United in fifth, but have a game in hand.

Ferdinand reacted to the news of City's ban on Twitter, posting a sarcastic message about United's fierce rivals.

He wrote: "What a shame......" alongside a crying laughing emoji.

The BT Sport pundit then responded with a more serious message, highlighting how the Premier League will be a lot more interesting in the wake of the news.

Ferdinand added: "Huge admiration for Pep and the Man City team with some friends behind the scenes.

"In all seriousness will be interesting to see what happens at the appeal process!

"5th place in the Premier League has just got very interesting!"

United return to action on Monday night following the winter break when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
