Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand makes Mason Greenwood and Ruud van Nistelrooy comparison

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Mason Greenwood will become the club's best finisher as his game progresses over time, while Rio Ferdinand drew similarities between the teenager and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Greenwood impressed after coming on in United's 4-1 Champions League victory over Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday evening.

The comfortable win against the Turkish champions - who won the reverse fixture 2-1 earlier this month - puts Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men within a point of qualifying for the last 16 of the European competition.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring at Old Trafford with a fine strike from the edge of the box, before he doubled his and United's tally just 12 minutes later.

Marcus Rashford then won a penalty after being fouled in the box, and the United forward stepped up and converted from 12 yards to give the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.

Basaksehir pulled one back with 15 minutes remaining before Greenwood set up Daniel James to restore United's three-goal advantage and secure a 4-1 win in injury time.

Speaking on BT Sport, former United midfielder Scholes tipped Greenwood to become the club's best finisher - ahead of the likes of Fernandes, Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial.

“He physically looks stronger now than the last time we saw him. He’s a big, strong and powerful lad, and he’s only going to get stronger as well," Scholes explained.

"I think out of the three or four forwards they have, he’ll be the best finisher as well."

Ferdinand added: “He looked very sharp. The passing forward in the No.10 spot, Van de Beek coming in there, and it just again showed his difference. Daniel James looked impressive when he came on too.

“Look at him (Greenwood), he’s growing as well. He’s going to be a beast to go with the technique he’s got, the understanding, his spacial awareness, he plays off both feet.

“I want to go and watch training. That’s what he gets out of me. I want to go and watch his technique, him lashing balls into the back of the net.

"We talk about Ruud van Nistelrooy, it excites you when you see finishers that finish aggressively, but with precision. He has that in abundance.”
