Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel trolls Liverpool FC over Champions League exit

Manchester United legend Peter Schemiechel has taken a swipe at fierce rivals Liverpool following their defeat in the Champions League.

The holders were eliminated on Wednesday after losing 3-2 on the night, 4-2 on aggregate, to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

It was a thrilling game at Anfield, in which former United transfer targets Marcos Llorente and Alvaro Morata inspired a come back to win in extra-time.

While Liverpool are on course to win the Premier League, they have exited the FA Cup and Champions League in the last week, ending the prospect of them equalling United’s historic Treble success.

The question of whether Jurgen Klopp’s side are as good as the great United team of 1999 under Sir Alex Ferguson has been asked many times, and it’s something that Schmeichel has taken umbrage with.

Following Liverpool’s stunning defeat, the great Dane took to Twitter to mock them for their loss.

Schmeichel tweeted a crying laughing emoji which was followed by the single word: “...not!” Clearly showing what the legendary goalkeeper thinks about comparisons between the two sides.

His former teammate Gary Neville hasn’t been one to shy away from making a joke at Liverpool’s expense in recent weeks, either.

Neville took great pleasure when the Reds lost their first Premier League game of the season against Watford and was at it again after Liverpool's loss to Atleti.

He quoted a tweet praising the team of 1999, of which he was a vital part, using an arms crossed emoji.
