Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel breaks silence on Roy Keane 'overrated' jibe

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has chosen to stay away from a potential war of words with Roy Keane.

Schmeichel and Keane were both teammates under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, but the pair never really saw eye to eye.

That's despite both players being part of Ferguson's history-making 1999 treble side, the season in which United won the Premier League, League Cup and Champions League — Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became a club legend when scoring the winner in the latter.

Keane has continued to endear himself to supporters after his retirement with his honesty in punditry and he recently delivered his assessment of Schmeichel's ability when asked by Gary Neville which stopper was the best he worked with across his career.

“I suppose I’d have to say Peter but I still feel he was overrated. He was," Keane told The Overlap.

"I just don’t think he was as good as everyone made out, but he was very good.”

Now, Schmeichel has responded to that jibe, but the United legend has chosen to keep his cards close to his chest.

When appearing on beIN SPORTS's Premier League coverage this weekend alongside Richard Keys and Andy Gray, Schmeichel was asked if had a response to Keane's comments.

"I actually don't", Schmeichel said, smiling away.
