Manchester United great Paul Scholes praises Anthony Martial display vs City but highlights mistake striker made

Paul Scholes believes Anthony Martial must be more ruthless and 'selfish' in front of goal if he's to build on his promising display against Man City.

Martial was rejuvenated in the Manchester derby as he led the United line in the absence of Edinson Cavani and made an instant impact, winning a penalty in the first minute at the Etihad Stadium. The Frenchman continue to be a menace to City throughout and Gary Neville named him the Man Of The Match on Sky Sports.

Scholes concurred with his ex-teammate on Martial's overall performance, praising the United No.9, but he also picked out a major missed opportunity in the second half when Martial shot straight at City keeper Ederson. Scholes wants the United striker to become more clinical.

He told Premier League Productions: “Today against a good Manchester City team I thought they were excellent on the counter-attack. I thought Martial was really good as he [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] said in the interview.

“He’s not scored today, he’s had a great opportunity to score, but the other things he did that meant he was a real threat. He was working hard."

Scholes then said Martial can become a consistent goal-scorer for United again now that his confidence is back up, and if he takes more big chances.

He added: “He has quality, I really like him. I think he’s suffered the last 10 or so games with confidence more than anything. The lad has got real ability, he probably should’ve scored today when he had a great chance and the keeper saved to his left-hand side.

“When you go to Manchester City that might be the only chance you get. A really ruthless centre-forward - they take it, they know. They understand, they have that nastiness and selfishness, be ruthless.

"'I’ve got to be ready, if I get that one chance I’ll put it away’. I don’t think he’s got that streak in him. But if he does get that streak in him this is a lad who will get you 25 to 30 goals a season.”
