Manchester United great issues promising Bruno Fernandes verdict in Paul Scholes comparison

Manchester United great Jaap Stam has offered his verdict on new signing Bruno Fernandes after his switch to the Reds last month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side showed brief interest in Fernandes last summer but nothing came to fruition, only for United and Sporting to manage a breakthrough in the January transfer window.

Fernandes joined the Reds in an initial £46.5 million move from Sporting Lisbon, and the Portuguese midfielder has impressed in his first two games.

He was named the club’s man of the match in both matches against Wolves and Chelsea, and Stam has heaped praise on United’s new star midfielder.

Stam has now compared Fernandes to club legend Paul Scholes by remarking on the similarities between the two when it comes to their scoring and passing capabilities.

"I think Fernandes is a bit similar to Scholesy," Stam told 888sport. "He’s always looking to play forward.

"He’s got the ability to score, he’s got a great free kick, he’s got a great pass. He is always looking to get into certain areas to get onto the ball and be influential in the game.

"Scholesy was a bit more aggressive without the ball, but in football intelligence he is similar to Scholes."
