Manchester United great Gary Neville reveals he ignored Sir Alex Ferguson advice as Valencia boss

Gary Neville has admitted he ignored advice from legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson during his spell in charge of La Liga side Valencia.

The former defender took the reigns at Valencia in December 2015 following a stint as England assistant manager under Roy Hodgson.

Under Neville's stewardship, Valencia crashed out of the Champions League at the group stages and suffered a humiliating 7-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey following a run of eight games without a win.

Neville was sacked in March 2016 with the club sitting 14th in the table, just six points clear of the relegation zone, having failed to keep a single clean sheet during his time in charge.

The United favourite revealed he was offered advice by former mentor Ferguson but chose to ignore it - a decision he now regrets.

"Early on, it was clear that some players were unhappy. I should have made big decisions on players that weren't committed to the club at that point," he told Sky Sports.

"I remember speaking to Sir Alex Ferguson quite early on and his advice was: 'Just get rid of them, son. Protect yourself. Only have people in the dressing room that are facing the same direction as you.'

"But I didn't listen.

"I tried to talk some players round to staying until the end of the season. But they weren't happy.

"I ignored Sir Alex Ferguson's advice. Not my wisest moment."
