Manchester United great Gary Neville questions Covid passports amid Premier League talks

Gary Neville reckons there is no need to introduce Covid passports for fans ahead of the Premier League season.

The former Manchester United captain has regularly challenged the Government and their stance throughout the devastating pandemic, with further restrictions having been eased on Monday.

Ahead of the new season getting under way next month, the Premier League remain in talks on whether or not to introduce passports, which would give supporters the green light on account of them being fully vaccinated.

A final decision has yet to be made - with newly-promoted Brentford and Arsenal getting the season underway in West London on Friday, August 13.

United get their campaign going a day later with a Saturday lunchtime clash against bitter rivals Leeds United (12.30pm).

Pointing to the success of test events, though - with upwards of 60,000 fans also allowed to watch the Euro 2020 final at Wembley - Neville has slammed that would-be decision.

Posting to 4.6million followers on Twitter, the Sky Sports pundit and ex-United defender said: "You shouldn't need a passport to watch a football match! Test events have been carried out with great success."

With just over three weeks to go until the 2021/2022 campaign begins, the Government are still to determine what qualifies as a large crowd and the venues that might require passports, while the Premier League is also reviewing the latest guidelines set out by No 10.

As recently as April, the Premier League wrote a letter to various bodies stating the benefits of Covid passports.

It read: "All sports can see the benefit that a Covid certification process offers in getting more fans safely back to their sport as quickly as possible. We know that our stadia can only be fully filled with an assurance process. This process must ensure that everyone can access stadia and must include arrangements that would verify a negative Covid test or an antibody test or vaccination certification."
