Manchester United great Gary Neville explains how he and Ryan Giggs reinvented Salford City

Salford City were a non-league club without much hope of going anywhere before the Class of '92 took over in March 2014.

Former Manchester United stars Ryan Giggs , Gary Neville , Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt made the decision to buy the then Premier League Division North side just five years ago.

By the summer of 2014 once the dust had settled on the takeover, the target for the club was clear. Achieve promotion through the leagues to the Championship in the space of 15 years.

Peter Lim, a Singapore-based billionaire and owner of Valencia, bought a 50% stake in the club in the September of that year before David Beckham took a 10% stake of that by January, 2019.

In the meantime, Salford had jumped up through the leagues and eventually earned promotion to League Two in May thanks to a remarkable 3-0 win over AFC Fylde in the National League play-off final.

But how did the idea of reinventing the once lowly-Salford City come about? Ahead of the club's historic Carabao Cup fixture at home to Leeds United this evening, Neville revealed all in an interview with Sky Sports.

"It came out of a conversation that me and Giggsy had on a train on the way back from London," Neville told Sky Sports when asked how Salford City were created.

"We talked about setting up an academy at a soccer school but we decided that ultimately without a first team for players to go into it wouldn't be worth doing.

"So we thought about a club instead and here we are."
