Manchester United great explains why Liverpool FC must be awarded Premier League title

Manchester United great Edwin van der Sar insists Liverpool must be awarded the Premier League title even if the season is ended prematurely.

All elite level sport in England has been postponed until 1 June at the earliest with the English football still on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Premier League officials are still adamant on finishing the season when it is safe to do so with Liverpool being made to agonisingly wait for their first league title in 30 years.

Jurgen Klopp's side currently possess a 25-point lead over their nearest rivals and would only need two wins from their last nine to be assured of the trophy.

Van der Sar believes it is only right Liverpool are awarded the title and says they must be declared champions even if no more matches are played.

"In my view, with the type of football they played and the points they are ahead, it would be extremely harsh," Van der Sar told CNN Sport.

"The Premier League is a well-run league and of course there are big interests on the financial side, the commercial sides.

"But I'm sure they will make a wise decision if they keep on playing or if the league stops, what the results will be depending for Champions League places, relegation or awarding a title to Liverpool.

"If the league doesn't resume, I presume everybody will be OK if Liverpool wins the title."
