Manchester United great Edwin van der Sar responds to Rio Ferdinand message

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has repaid a compliment given to him by Rio Ferdinand.

The pair conversed pitchside prior to Tottenham's Champions League defeat by Ajax on Tuesday night and Ferdinand followed up the meeting by tweeting an image of the pair an hour before kick-off.

"Always good to see my last line of security vdsar1970! Good Luck to your team this evening," Ferdinand wrote alongside the picture.

Responding to the tweet in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Ajax CEO Van der Sar wrote: "With you two (Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic) in front me felt really comfortable most of the time... good night you all!!"

Both Van der Sar and Ferdinand have recently been linked with United's yet-to-be-created technical director role.

Ferdinand was asked on BT Sport whether his pre-match conversation with Van der Sar involved him getting some tips off the Reds' former No.1 ahead of a potential return to United.

"He’s a lovely fellow, doing a great job, he was just telling me the ins and outs of what he gets up to there," Ferdinand responded. "He says it’s very demanding but very satisfying playing at a level like this."

Rio Ferdinand's Matthijs de Ligt transfer verdict will excite Manchester United fans

In an interview with the Sunday Times earlier this month, Van der Sar said he will not leave Ajax this summer to return to Old Trafford.

He said: "I want to feel I contribute, and you can only do it for something you believe in. United is a special place. Who knows, eventually? But for the coming years I’m here (at Ajax)."
