Manchester United great beats Liverpool FC star Van Dijk and team-mate to win Premier League vote

Manchester United great Nemanja Vidic has beaten off competition from Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk to be crowned the Premier League's best centre-back ever.

While this was just a vote on social media via Sky Sports' Twitter account, 51,000 fans got involved in the final between Vidic and Van Dijk, with the former United defender having already edged out an array of top names during the previous rounds.

Vidic signed for the Red Devils back in 2006 and won the Premier League title five times and the Champions League once, alongside successes in the League Cup (four wins), Community Shield (five medals) and FIFA Club World Cup.

The former Serbia star eventually left Old Trafford in 2014 for Inter Milan and retired two years later.

Despite three years passing since he hung up his boots, the 37-year-old is still clearly a United fan favourite and well-liked.

Vidic edged out Chelsea legend John Terry in the quarter-finals of the vote and former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand in the semis before beating Van Dijk in the final.

Former Man City captain and Arsenal captain Vincent Kompany and Tony Adams respectively also fell by the wayside, as did Sol Campbell and ex-United centre-back Jaap Stam.
