Manchester United goalkeeper signs first professional contract

Young Manchester United goalkeeper Jacob Carney has signed his first professional contract with the club.

The 19-year-old, who has trained with the first team on occasion in the past season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, made the announcement on his own Twitter page, as United complete a series of contract extensions ahead of the summer.

Carney also spent part of last season on loan with non-league outfit Stockbridge Park Steels, the club at which Leicester's Jamie Vardy started his career. Carney also made just a solitary appearance for United's Under-23s in the 2019/20 season.

He travelled to Malaga in Spain for the first team squad's warm-weather training camp in February to accompany senior goalkeepers David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant and Nathan Bishop.

In the Under-23s, Carney has been competing for a spot with Matej Kovar and Paul Woolston, while United have also recently signed 16-year-old Czech keeper Radek Vitek.

Revealing the news on social media, Carney said: "Proud to sign my first professional contract with Manchester United. Thank you to my family and coaches for all their support."

The announcement follows a first ever professional United contract for 17-year-old midfield prodigy Charlie Wellens. Others earlier in the campaign to sign contracts include centre-back Teden Mengi, young midfielder Mark Helm and forward Dillon Hoogewerf.
