Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar signs new contract

Matej Kovar has signed a new contract at Manchester United.

Kovar is the first-choice goalkeeper for Neil Wood's Under-23 side and has impressed between the sticks this season, keeping five clean sheets in six appearances.

The 19-year-old joined United from Czech side FC Slovacko in 2018 and was included in the squad Ole Gunnar Solskjaer selected last month for group phase of the Reds' Europa League campaign.

Kovar follows in academy teammate Alex Fojticek's footsteps in signing a new contract.

Fojticek, also 19, penned an extension in July before joining Stalybridge Celtic on a six-month loan.

"Both Matej and Alex deserve these contracts; they’ve come from the Czech Republic and Slovakia and settled really well in Manchester,” the head of United's academy Nick Cox said.

"Signing their contracts will enable both goalkeepers to continue their development under our excellent coaches.

“This is a great time for our academy goalkeepers with both Dean Henderson [England] and Kieran O’Hara [Republic of Ireland] receiving senior international call-ups, and we are looking forward to seeing all of our young keepers fulfil their potential.”
