Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in contention for Premier League award

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is in contention to win the Premier League's Golden Glove award at the end of the season.

The Golden Glove is awarded to the goalkeeper who has kept the most clean sheets in the division during the course of the campaign. Last season, Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson was awarded the accolade after keeping 20 clean sheets.

He was level with Manchester City's Ederson come the end of the season but was given the award by virtue of playing fewer matches for the Merseyside club. The race for this season's prize is similarly tight following last night's United result.

During the 1-0 victory over Brentford, De Gea kept his 12th clean sheet of the campaign moving him just one behind Newcastle United's Nick Pope on 13. Elsewhere, Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale is also on 12 clean sheets while Alisson and Ederson are closely following on 11 and 10 respectively.

De Gea's performances for the Reds this season have split opinions among the fanbase with some criticising the 'keeper for his distribution during matches. His polarising opinion among the supporters was highlighted on Wednesday night in the win over Thomas Frank's Bees.

Having played a long goal kick that went straight to the opposition, De Gea made a wonderful one-on-one save to keep his side ahead. The Spaniard's future at Old Trafford also remains in doubt at present.

Currently, he is set to leave the club at the end of the season having yet to agree a new contract with Erik ten Hag. When asked about a new deal, De Gea dismissed it as not being a priority.

"I’ve been here many many years, enjoying every moment in this club playing many games," he told Sky Sports. "Of course it's great to be here, it's a massive club and I love the club and I’m really happy here of course.

"It's been the same over the years, there's a lot of noise around the club but players just focus on games."
