David de Gea is a doubt for Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening after the goalkeeper went off injured at half-time of his side’s dramatic Premier League win against Southampton on Sunday.
The Spain international crashed into the post as he tried to keep out a James Ward-Prowse free-kick that put Southampton 2-0 ahead at St Mary’s after Jan Bednarek’s headed opener.
De Gea was able to continue until half-time, when he was replaced by Dean Henderson, before United put together a stunning comeback in the second half to seal a 3-2 win in the final moments after a Bruno Fernandes strike and brace of headers by substitute Edinson Cavani.
After the final whistle, United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provided an update on the fitness of his first-choice shotstopper, telling MUTV: “[De Gea picked up] a knock just above the knee.
“So hopefully he’ll be okay for Wednesday, but we don’t know.
“Let’s have a little scan or check tomorrow [Monday], but Dean came on and looked very assured.”
After the match, De Gea took to Instagram to write: “With a comeback like this one, the knee pain is more bearable!
“Great work, I'll be back soon. C'MON MY TEAM!”
United host PSG on Wednesday evening in Group H of the Champions League. United, who beat the Ligue 1 outfit in the reverse fixture, top the group with nine points from four games, while PSG are second with six points.
