Manchester United give update on signings before transfer deadline day

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reiterated Manchester United are working on possible signings to reinforce the squad before transfer deadline day.

United balked at Sporting Lisbon's €80million (£68.24m) valuation of Bruno Fernandes, 25, last week and Norwegian striker Erling Haaland rejected United in favour of joining Borussia Dortmund. The MEN revealed United are exploring the possibility of a loan deal for a central midfielder and the players have been told United are trying to sign a striker in the wake of Marcus Rashford's injury.

Rashford is sidelined for two months while Paul Pogba (ankle) and Scott McTominay (knee) are sidelined until after the winter break. United have a 16-day gap between matches in February and resume their schedule at Chelsea on the 17th.

"It is stretched but we're getting players back after the break as well," Solskjaer said. "So we will be better off for the break. But we're still working on one or two things so let's see if the club can get it over the line.

"On the training ground the mood's still good. Of course everyone's down because we don't win and we all want to win games and it's understandable sometimes supporters air their frustrations when the results are not great on the pitch.

"And the last week has been two disappointing results, which has probably enhanced that feeling. But you get used to it at this club. When you've been at this club as long as I have, you get used to the ups and downs and, as we've spoken about here, you've got to get on with it.

"When you do well you don't take off and when you do badly you know you've got a job to do and do better next time."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Manchester United working to bring in new signings before Deadline Day

Champions-elect Liverpool are 16 points clear midway through Jurgen Klopp's fifth season at the club, having reached the last two Champions League finals. The United XI against Burnley on Wednesday consisted of signings made by five managers whereas the Liverpool side that beat Wolves on Thursday night featured players bought only by Klopp and his predecessor Brendan Rodgers.

"For me, we do have a way of doing things," Solskjaer said. "You can see other teams have done well. You can see Jurgen spent four years building his team and they're doing well now.

"It's not going to be a quick fix. It’s not going to be eight players in or 10 players in in one transfer window, we've had one proper transfer window, in the summer, because the Januarys are difficult, but we are still trying to do something now."
