Manchester United give update on Edinson Cavani contract extension

Manchester United will hold talks with Edinson Cavani to gauge whether he wants to stay at the club for a second season.

United signed Cavani, 34, in October on a one-year contract with the option of an additional year but the MEN reported last week United have not triggered the extension.

One-year options in players' contracts are usually at the discretion of United, but they did not automatically extend Zlatan Ibrahimovic's stay by another year after he joined on a free and on the same contract as Cavani.

Cavani has scored seven goals in 24 appearances for United and has cemented his place as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's favoured centre forward. Solskjaer said on Boxing Day Cavani has 'a few years left' in him yet was coy when asked for an update on the Uruguayan's future.

"I can only say Edinson has done well," Solskjaer said. "I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.

"It’s a good discussion to have, we always speak to the players and with his contract situation at the moment we’re very pleased with what he’s done."

Dean Henderson recorded his sixth clean sheet in 11 starts for United in the 4-0 thrashing of Real Sociedad in the Europa League but David de Gea is expected to regain his place for the Premier League visit of Newcastle on Sunday.

United are five goals shy of conceding as many goals as they did in the league last season and De Gea's form has been an issue for nearly two years. Henderson has started twice in the league this term but the last of those was at Sheffield United on December 17.

"Of course Dean is in with a shout, we pick a team Saturday," Solskjaer clarified. "Dean tonight was very solid, good kicking, should have had an assist for Marcus, which is another thing we worked on today.

"He was clean in his handling, clean with his short passes, a good performance and he is maturing all the time.

"But I have a very, very good goalkeeper in David and he saved us against West Brom so I can’t say to you now. I always speak to the players first before I say who’s not playing, they’ll know."
